61 Mercury Comet - Gathering Parts
Переглядів 258Місяць тому
I know it's been awhile since the last update. Fear not, I'm at the "just add money" stage of this project. Slowly gathering all the parts that will be needed in order to make this a drivable car.

Before we can install the Mustang II crossmember, we need to box the frame rails. Follow along as I prepare the rails and then weld in the frame boxing kit.
61 Mercury Comet - Front Suspension Removal
Переглядів 2654 місяці тому
Follow along this week, as I remove the entire front suspension from the 1961 Mercury Comet. Including cutting out the shock towers. Makes for a ton more room in the engine bay, and paves the way for the Mustang II style suspension install.

Heck of a way to start a new project. After failing to get the original engine in my Comet to start, I dig in to find out why. Also a bunch of other little bits of progress.

Saw this sweet machine for sale and fell in love with it. It’s going to take me forever, but I’ll try to post videos as I go. This is a very short and sweet intro video, a quick walk around. I’ll babble about my intentions in a future video, when I’m turning some wrenches.

Little bit of a miscellaneous episode. Got the intake flowbenched. Removed the exhaust and welded in the O2 sensor bung. Came up with an air filter and a way to mount it. Found a home for the fuse/relay box as well as the MegaSquirt brain.

    Does this increase the ground clearance and does this make suspension soft or stiffer?

    • @1ManWrenching
      @1ManWrenching 7 годин тому

      It simply makes it stiffer. Increases preload.

    Probably a good idea to put a rag over the throttle body to prevent those tiny coil on plug bolts falling into it. Also a set of front and rear stands does wonders for stability. Still have to support the middle when removing the top frame.

    Green in that shade is a Kawasaki colour. About the hardware, Ukraine is at war. With Putin's co. so you're lucky to get it at all. You could slip the window off and rotate that frame, possibly? You want a good high strength steel band from the axle nut to the front step so it can't hang the wheel up accidentally? It looks like the wheel alignment is totally fudged also. But I'm watching on a wanky cell device so the imagery is probably distorted to F?!

    What happens if you don't use the jack and remove the filter and spark plugs, will the engine fall and could damage something?

    • @1ManWrenching
      @1ManWrenching 22 дні тому

      The bike will fold up like a pair of scissors. Those two top bars that you remove are a structural part of the bike.

    Im building my own sidecar since i found it its cheaper and now im trying to learn where are the connections i mean where they should be and i also found out that angles are important for your steering so all the rods are adjustable for different lengths for angles now this video really did help after numerous of videos of this 😄 (sorry for any misspelling english is not my first language)

      I noticed a serious lack of videos on the subject when I did my rig. Not too hard at all to build the sidecar yourself, next time I build a rig, that’s what I plan to do.

    LS swap into a Merc? Abomination. You have 3 choices: winsor/5.0, 460 based, or Coyote. Please dont desecrate a clean Comet with a Chevy Motor. Please.

      I was planning to build an LS and swap it into something long before I found this car. It can always have something else swapped into it later in the future. I just love how common and affordable LS engines are. Great power, great gas mileage, light, tons of aftermarket options, tons of transmission options, I can literally get a bellhousing for every transmission out there to hook up to an LS engine. At least it’s still American. I’m not swapping a 2JZ or some BMW motor or some other import option.

    use a blade screwdriver against that inside lip on the wheel cap to install it, that way you don't ding it up. you also use the screw driver to remove that cap. when the time comes.
